PhD abstract

A study has been done on the double modulation coherent population trapping atomic clock and its stability limitations over long times. An overview of the state of the art of compact clocks in the world has been given. The theoretical framework of the DM-CPT is then presented, followed by a description of the experimental set-up with the laser source, the microwave synthesis and the atomic resonator. A detailed account of the limitations of the clock has been given at 1 s and 1000 s by listing the different contributions. Finally, a new time sequence has been proposed to correct the light effects due to the imbalances between the two wavelengths used for the CPT by acting on the microwave power, thus improving the stability on long times. In conclusion, the DM-CPT clock is positioned in relation to other available technologies and some further improvements to be made have been proposed.
