PhD abstract

Since the 1970s, the study of the ß shape has been limitedly investigated and there is a growing interest from several users such as ionising radiation metrology, nuclear medicine, nuclear energy, and from fundamental physics. The existing databases are incomplete and lack of accuracy to meet their requirements. In this thesis, a precise ß spectrometer in a quasi-4π geometry is developed based on two silicon detectors in sandwich with a radioactive source. Different source preparation techniques and their influence on the shape ß of the spectrum are studied. The device is characterised using the conversion electron of 109Cd and 207Bi decays, and the ß spectra from 14C, 36Cl, 99Tc and 204Tl decays are studied. An unfolding method is developed to correct the minimised distortions based on PENELOPE Monte Carlo simulations. The response function of the system is built from mono-energetic simulations and the measured spectra are unfolded by applying the matrix inversion method. Finally, the resulting spectra are compared with some high precision measurements performed with Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters, showing excellent agreement in the common energy range.

PhD abstract

Isotopic analysis of actinides is necessary for fuel cycle management, non-proliferation treaty control or environmental monitoring. The accuracy of these analyses may be limited by the performance of the detector used but also by the uncertainties associated with the emission intensities available in the nuclear data tables. The disintegration of actinides is generally followed by intense X-ray and gamma photon emissions in the energy range below 100 keV. Their detection may be of particular interest for actinide analysis. However, conventional measurement techniques do not allow to properly separate the lines of the considered emissions. This thesis was devoted to the measurement of intensities using a cryogenic detector. The latter is based on a magnetic metallic calorimeter (MMC) that measures energy deposition as a temperature rise. The MMC, called SMX3, has four pixels and is specifically designed for high resolution X-ray and gamma spectrometry in the energy range below 100 keV to measure actinide emission intensities. In addition to the high resolution provided by SMX3 through its operating principle, this detector has a constant detection efficiency and almost equal to 100% over the energy range below 25 keV, where actinides' XL rays are emitted.The SMX3 yield curve was calibrated by a method that consists of a single standard source measurement of Am-241 combined with Monte Carlo simulations. The three actinides Pu-238, Pu-239, and Cm-244 were measured to provide absolute and relative intensities of Li-Yj emissions (with Y=L,M,N,O,P i=1,2,3 and j=1..7). Thanks to the very high energy resolution of the MMC, the individual XL lines of actinides can be separated. Satellite lines are also detected, their intensities relative to the diagram lines depend on the isotope according to the fundamental atomic parameters. The intensities of the individual XL lines could be determined for the first time, especially for the transitions L₁-L₃. In addition, the intensities of the XLi regions (i=1,2,3) were established. The intensities of the overall XL and XL groups are compared with the calculations and experimental data available in the literature.

In France, the references associated to the neutron fluence and the deriva-ted dosimetric quantities are under the responsability of the micro-irradiation and neutronmetrology and dosimetry laboratory (LMDN)of IRSN. In order to improve the definition ofreferences in fluence and energy of the monoenergetic neutron fields, produced at AMANDEfacility, a micro-TPC gaseous detector, called LNE-IRSN-MIMAC, is developping in collabo-ration with LPSC.In a previous work, the detector was qualified for neutron fields in the energy rangebetween 27 keV and 565 keV. The objective of the present work is to extend the range of theμTPC above 1 MeV. The choice of the gas, the development of an analysis method and thedetector characterization allowed to validate the detector capacity to perform measurements inmonoenergetic neutron fields ranging from 250 keV up to 6,5 MeV with a relative uncertaintyof 3% and 2,5% respectively in energy and fluence.

PhD abstract

Chalcogenide materials are compounds based on S, Se, and Te elements from group VI of the periodic table. They are receiving an extensive interest not only for applications in resistive memories (PCRAM and CBRAM), photonics and photovoltaics but also in the development of new 2-D materials (e.g. spintronics applications). Chalcogenide materials are already present in the semiconductor roadmaps and it is already replacing flash memories (e.g. phase change material and ovonic threshold switch in new random access memory). For the next technology nodes, chalcogenide properties can be scaled by tuning the chemical composition or by reducing the film thickness. Nonetheless, it also means that their properties become more tightly influenced by the chemical composition, the surface/interface effects and the depth-profile composition. Hence, dedicated metrology protocols must be developed, first to assist the optimization of chalcogenide materials processes in cleanroom environment, then to allow non-destructive process monitoring with industry-driven uncertainties. In this PhD thesis, we developed metrology protocols based on X-ray techniques, dedicated to thin chalcogenides materials and fully compatible with inline monitoring. First, we used quasi in-situ X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) to characterize the surface of Ge, Sb, Te thin materials and compounds, and to study the composition-dependent evolution of the surface after air break and ageing. The efficiency of in situ capping strategies to protect Te-based and Se-based thin layered materials from ageing was also investigated. Secondly, we demonstrated the ability of improved metrology strategies based on in-line Wavelength Dispersive X-ray Fluorescence (WDXRF) and XPS to accurately quantify the chemical composition of Ge-Sb-Te compounds (from 1 to 200 nm) and ultrathin 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (MoS₂, WS₂). Combined WDXRF/XPS analysis was used to determine refined values of composition-dependent relative sensitivity factors for Te4d, Sb4d and Ge3d that allow for XPS-based metrology of PCRAM materials with mastered accuracy. We pointed the need for in-depth study of the significant matrix effects that alter the ability of WDXRF to quantify Nitrogen in Ge-Sb-Te materials: ion beam analysis was carefully investigated as possible input for WDXRF calibration, and a WDXRF protocol was established for inline monitoring of N-doped Ge-Sb-Te films in a specific process window. Finally, we investigated two ways to non-destructively characterize the in-depth chemical distribution in thin chalcogenide films: we demonstrated that the combination of XRF in grazing incidence geometry (GIXRF) and X-ray reflectometry (XRR) was able to unambiguously reveal small process differences along with process-induced diffusion in 10 nm-thick stackings. We showed that the use of multilayered substrate instead of silicon allowed fine-tuning of the depth-dependent X-ray standing wave field, resulting in improved sensitivity of XRR/GIXRF strategies. We also developed an angle-resolved XPS protocol for the evaluation of the first deposition steps of GeTe and Ge₂Sb₂Te₅ films, revealing the process-dependent elemental distribution as a function of the film growth. Therefore, in this work we not only elaborated advanced metrology protocols for the development of new chalcogenide films but also metrological solutions for the next technology nodes (28 nm and below), since current in-line metrology tools reach their detection limits.

PhD abstract

Reactor dosimetry is used to determine the neutron fluence during an irradiation and to characterize its spectrum (neutron energy distribution). This technique is based on the analysis of the activity of irradiated dosimeters, made of pure metals or alloys. The activity measurement of these samples is performed by gamma and/or X-ray spectrometry and is currently based on specific standard dosimeters, validated for the measurement conditions. The goal of the thesis is to avoid this calibration step and to be able to directly measure the activity of the sample. The study focused specifically on niobium and rhodium dosimeters which are used to characterize neutrons in the energy range around 1 MeV. Their activation produces 93mNb and 103mRh, respectively. These two radionuclides decay through an isomeric gamma transition, emitting mainly K X-rays with energies around 20 keV, on which the spectrometric activity measurement is based. However, owing to their low energy, these X-rays are particularly difficult to measure accurately. The various parameters required to determine the activity of the dosimeters, with a relative standard uncertainty of around 2%, were studied in detail. The work initially focused on the calibration of hyper-pure germanium (HPGe) detectors in the energy range between 11 keV and 150 keV. This is a crucial step in determining the activity of a radionuclide sample and is difficult to achieve in the energy range of interest. The experimental approach, using standard point sources, was coupled with semi-empirical modelling and simulations of radiation-matter interactions by Monte Carlo methods (PENELOPE and GEANT4). These methods have made it possible to study in detail the photons scattering at low energy, around 20 keV, which interferes with the full-energy peaks in the spectra and disturbs their analysis. In a second step, Monte Carlo simulations were used to calculate the correction factors needed to derive the dosimeter activity: self-absorption of photons in the dosimeter material and the geometry change between the calibration conditions (point source) and the measurement conditions (solid metal sample). The fluorescence induced by impurities (in the dosimeter material or created during irradiation in the reactor) was studied and the correction factors to be applied were established. Radioactive decay data, particularly photon emission intensities, are the main components of the uncertainty in dosimeter activity results. X-ray emission intensities are rarely measured experimentally and most often their values are calculated from fundamental parameters i.e. internal conversion coefficients and fluorescence yields, and a balanced decay scheme, of the nuclide. Several experiments were designed to provide new experimental data. The mass attenuation coefficients and K fluorescence yields of niobium and rhodium were determined using a monochromatic photon beam at the SOLEIL synchrotron facility. The photon emission intensities of 103mRh were measured using two approaches, one from rhodium activated at the ISIS reactor and the other from a solution of palladium 103. All these new values are compared with previously published data and the decay scheme of 103mRh is discussed.
