Abstract

Ultra-intense lasers represent a new way to produce neutron fields, more compact than nuclear reactors or accelerators and with fewer radiological constraints than these conventional sources. The electric field induced by an ultra-intense laser pulse within a micrometer-sized target can reach several TV/m, allowing for the acceleration of protons to several tens of MeV. These protons can then be intercepted by a second target, called a converter, in which they induce nuclear reactions and thus produce neutrons. This technique, known as the pitcher-catcher technique, is capable of generating very intense fluxes (> 1017 n/cm²/s) at energies up to several tens of MeV, making it possible to envision applications such as neutron imaging or the laboratory reproduction of the rapid nucleosynthesis process responsible for the creation of the heaviest elements.

To demonstrate the feasibility of these applications and ensure the radiological protection of these laser facilities, these neutron fields must be optimally characterized. Detectors with ultra-fast electronics or passive detectors appear to be most compatible to the characteristics of laser-driven neutron sources (very brief and intense emissions, noisy environment, etc.).

This thesis work focuses on optimizing the development of a neutron activation spectrometer (SPAC), particularly suitable for measuring intense neutron fields with a strong gamma component. In addition to simulations of the expected source terms and detector responses using Geant4 & MCNP Monte Carlo codes, bubble dosimeters, Time-of-Flight detectors and activation samples were used on various laser facilities such as ALLS (Canada) and Apollon (France), to optimize and characterize the produced neutron emissions.

PhD abstract

The X and gamma rays emitted by radionuclides can be used to calibrate the energy scale of energy-dispersive detectors. This is particularly the case for cryogenic detectors, which offer excellent resolution but have non-linearities that need to be corrected. In order to calibrate these detectors accurately below 200 keV, it is necessary to have X-rays and gamma rays with an uncertainty of the order of 0.1 eV. However, recommended gamma-ray photon energies meeting this criterion are rare or based on a single experimental measurement.

The main objective of this thesis is to measure gamma photons below 200 keV with excellent resolution in order to improve the uncertainties on their energies to around 0.1 eV.

To meet this objective, a new cryogenic detector has been designed. It is a Metallic Magnetic Calorimeter (MMC) with eight 50 µm-thick gold absorbers covering a total surface area of 8.4 mm².

An assembly was built to house: four MMC chips, two SQUID chips for reading-out the MMCs, and the printed circuits to connect them to the cables of the dilution refrigerator. The set-up also includes a cryogenic radioactive source sampler, specially designed to operate at very low temperatures and to measure up to four sources sequentially.

The sources measured are mixtures of several radionuclides: three standard radionuclides used to correct the non-linearity of the MMC (169Yb, 57Co and 153Gd) and seven radionuclides used to measure their X and gamma energies with very low uncertainty (109Cd, 133Ba, 155Eu, 210Pb, 239Np, 241Am and 243Am). Mixtures of radionuclides in the sources were chosen by Monte Carlo simulations to minimise spectral interference. Ytterbium-169 was produced by irradiating a thulium foil with deuterons at the Arronax cyclotron. Two independent measurement sessions on two set of four sources were carried out at around 16 mK during two weeks, with different temperature control conditions.

The energy resolution of the detector is 15 eV to 36 eV for gamma-rays between 0 keV and 200 keV. The non-linearity of each absorber was corrected using the lines of the standard radionuclides and a second-degree polynomial.

The X-ray and gamma-ray energies measured were analysed and combined using various methods. Regardless of the measurement session and analysis method used, the energies obtained are consistent with each other, with only the uncertainties differing. In the end, the energies of 15 gamma-ray lines were measured and for 14 of them, the uncertainty obtained, around 0.2 eV, is lower than the recommended values. Eight Kα X-ray photon energies were also measured; for these well-known lines, very good agreement was observed with the recommended values, thus validating the methodology used in the work presented.

The thesis aims to develop radioactive surface sources to improve the traceability of surface contamination measurements carried out during dismantling operations. In particular, the ultimate aim is to provide radioactive sources that can be traceable and used in the field to characterize the performance of surface contamination monitors. The sources that meet the requirements of international standards have very different characteristics from the surfaces to be monitored during decontamination and dismantling (D&D) activities. They consist of a rigid aluminum substrate on which surface the activity is deposited and then covered with a protective layer.

The study involved developing methods for modifying two types of substrates, polymeric and aluminum, to attach radioactive elements (trivalent lanthanide and actinide). For aluminum substrates, coating with manganese or chromium oxides was tested, along with silanol functionalization and phosphonic acid grafting. The surface modification of polymeric substrates was based on oxidation, followed by sulfonic acid grafting. Whatever the substrate, the study was divided into several stages: preparing the surface, functionalizing/modifying it, attaching the radioactivity and quantifying the uniformity of the radioactive distribution.

Each stage was optimized and characterized using SEM, ATR-FTIR, liquid scintillation and autoradiography. The aluminum substrate, while flexible, allows to be compared with current standard sources. Additionally, the polymeric substrates can be adapted to mimic the real constraints of the D&D sites (sand load, roughness, molding of complex shapes). Finally, an assessment of the compliance of the sources with existing standards was carried out, even though these standards do not meet the complex needs of measurements on D&D sites. The polymeric substrates coated with manganese oxide could uptake close to 100% of ¹⁵²Eu and ²⁴¹Am when immersed in acidic radioactive solutions for a few hours. For these sources, the uniformity of the radionuclide distribution reached 90%.

PhD abstract

The characterization of thin films and multilayered materials is crucial in advanced material science and its applications. In this thesis we introduce a reference-free method for the characterization of thin lm materials by combining X-ray Reflectivity (XRR) and Grazing Incidence X-ray Fluorescence (GIXRF) techniques. XRR is a sensitive technique to the electronic density, allowing for determination of the density, thickness and roughness of thin layers. On the other hand, GIXRF is sensitive to the elemental density, providing information on the elemental depth distribution. The combination of these techniques removes ambiguous results for the characterization of nanometer layers, as well as nanometer depth profiles, resulting in a more accurate sample characterization. The reference-free method is based on the physics of ionization and absorption and requires knowledge of the atomic fundamental parameters rather than the use of reference materials or calibration standards. However, the combined analysis of GIXRF and XRR is a challenging task due to the high number of fitting parameters and to the different dynamic ranges of these two techniques; since XRR exhibits a normalized signal from 0 to 1, whereas a GIXRF spectrum is a histogram presenting peaks of which areas ranging from hundreds to millions of counts.

To address these challenges, we propose in this thesis a recursive method for estimating uncertainties in combined GIXRF-XRR analysis based on the Bootstrap statistical method. This method involves generating random weights to be multiplied by the cost function data points. The application of these weights results in new set of optimized thin film values that differs from the original ones. By repeating the process, a set of optimized structures are calculated, of which statistics can be performed to deduce the uncertainties on the optimized parameters of the sample structure. An additional problem in the reference-free combined GIXRF-XRR analysis is the consideration of uncertainties in the fundamental parameters and the solid angle of detection. We therefore introduce a Monte Carlo-based approach to calculate the uncertainty on the solid angle of detection and the fundamental parameters which are included in the combined analysis. The measurement of several selected samples using GIXRF and XRR were carried out in the CASTOR goniometer on the MÉTROLOGIE beamline of the SOLEIL synchrotron facility. XRR data were initially analyzed to estimate structural composition with IMD software, followed by the fitting XRF spectra using COLEGRAM to derive the intensity of fluorescence X-ray emission lines. The combined GIXRF-XRR analysis was afterwards performed using ELIXIR, in-house software, to derive the sample structure and the associated uncertainties were calculated by a Mathematica program. This methodology was applied to amorphous and crystalline chalcogenides GexSbyTez with different (x, y, z) compositions and on tantalum-based thin films, doped with different elements. The derived uncertainties on the sample structure, fundamental parameters, and solid angle were analyzed. Furthermore, some fundamental parameters, namely mass attenuation coefficients, fluorescence yields and photoelectric absorption coefficients for iron and yttrium were measured and their uncertainties were estimated using different methods. Finally, to improve the resolution of the fluorescence detection, we developed a prototype of a wavelength dispersive spectrometer (WDS) based on Bragg's diffraction, which includes a crystal and a high-resolution CCD sensor, achieving a resolution of 2eV at 8048eV.

Accurate fractional electron capture probabilities and beta spectra measurements are vital in radionuclide metrology. When determining the SI unit of activity, Becquerel, using primary activity measurements e.g . by Liquid Scintillation Counting (LSC), decay data on beta decay and electron capture are essential. These data are also crucial for validating theoretical calculations and for numerous applications, including nuclear medicine, nuclear energy and waste management or neutrino physics research. Additionally, accurate data on the photon emission intensities from radionuclides undergoing electron capture (EC) is vital for calibrating X-ray and gamma-ray detectors. In the literature, most decay data concerning beta decay and electron capture is derived from old measurements or theoretical calculations having large or underestimated uncertainties. Recent measurements using cryogenic detectors revealed these discrepancies. Metallic Magnetic Calorimeters (MMCs) are cryogenic detectors that have demonstrated impressive performance in beta spectra, total decay energy, and X-ray measurements. Their key features include high energy resolution, a low energy threshold, excellent energy linearity, and nearly % detection eciency at low energies. This thesis employs MMCs in the Decay Energy Spectroscopy (DES) mode, also known as measurement mode, to measure the decay data for specic radionuclides undergoing beta decay (like 14C) and electron capture (such as 125I, 54Mn, 59Ni, and 51Cr). Emphasis is placed on the source preparation step to address spectral distortions that can arise from certain types of radionuclide samples. The obtained results showed improvement in uncertainties and are in large part in agreement with the literature values and those from the BetaShape calculation code.

PhD abstract

Over the last decades, antineutrino experiments conducted at short and long baselines from nuclear reactors and using detection techniques based on the inverse β-decay (IBD) have revealed a systematic and significant deficit of detected antineutrinos compared to the predicted fluxes. Besides this flux discrepancy, called the reactor antineutrino anomaly (RAA), a difference in the shape of the measured spectra compared to state-of-the-art predictions has been observed. No evidence for an experimental bias has so far been detected as the origin of these discrepancies, and the interpretation of the reactor antineutrino anomaly as a neutrino oscillation with a sterile neutrino state is currently disfavored by recent very short baseline reactor experiments. The validity of the predictions is also questioned as the source of the observed discrepancies, and has motivated a revision of the modelings of reactor antineutrino spectra. In this context, a revisited prediction has been developed and is presented in this PhD dissertation. In a nuclear reactor, antineutrinos are typically emitted during the β-decays of the products originating from the fission of four actinides making up more than 99% of the thermal power released in the core (²³⁵U, ²³⁸U, ²³⁹Pu, ²⁴¹Pu). During a beta decay, an excited nucleus ejects in correlation an electron and an antineutrino. The total emission probability and the energy spectra associated to each of these two particles are characteristic of the parent and daughter nuclei, and depend on their nuclear and atomic structures. The antineutrino spectrum emitted by a reactor core then results from the superposition of thousands of β spectra. The revised prediction is based on the summation method which consists in modeling each of these β transitions. An advanced modeling of the β-decay theory has been used to include various effects due to the Coulomb interaction between the emitted electron and the daughter nucleus through a numerical treatment. The latest evaluated nuclear data are used to model the thousands β-decays contributing to a reactor antineutrino spectrum, including the most recent data from total absorption gamma spectroscopy measurements. A thorough propagation of the uncertainties associated to both the modeling and the nuclear data evaluation has also been investigated, allowing to produce a consistent and conservative uncertainty budget for the revisited spectra. The new summation modeling is finally compared with other state-of-the-art predictions, and its improvements and limitations are discussed in regards to IBD datasets from recent short and long baseline reactor experiments.
