Abstract

Air quality is a major social issue. Among the many compounds that could be harmful for Human health, Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) belong to the most monitored and regulated pollutants. In France, the monitoring of VOCs in ambient air is carried out by sampling air onto activated carbon cartridges during a given period (7 or 14 days) by the “Associations Agréées de Surveillance de la Qualité de l’Air” (AASQA). This method consists of two parts: sampling and analysis. To ensure the reliability of their measurement results, laboratories must guarantee the traceability of their analysis and validate their analytical protocols: this can be done by the use of Certified matrix Reference Materials (CRMs). However, in France, no reference materials are available for the measurement of VOCs in air onto sorbent tubes. Therefore, LNE developed a system for loading benzene, from a gaseous reference material onto Carbopack X tubes. These CRMs could be used for the calibration of analytical systems and for the evaluation of analytical laboratories. After this development phase, LNE has organized a proficiency testing between three expert laboratories, based on the implementation of these materials: it shows no significant differences between analyzed masses and loaded masses for each participating laboratories.

Abstract

Abstract

In 2008, creatinine measurement was the fifth most common analysis in laboratory medicine in France. Creatinine is the main biomarker used for the diagnosis, follow-up and monitoring of chronic kidney disease, a serious pathology that affects approximately three million subjects in France. To avoid the evolution of chronic kidney disease to end stage renal disease, it is essential to have reliable creatinine measurements in order to allow efficient and early diagnosis. To address these challenges, the contribution of metrology is essential to improve clinical measurements reliability and comparability. First, reference methods are necessary to assign reference values to calibration materials. This is the first step to establish the metrological traceability of results to the International system of units (SI) and lead to the standardization of medical analysis. Second, reference methods are essential to assign reference values to quality control samples, providing suitable tools for assessing the accuracy of routine methods and those used by in vitro diagnostic products manufacturers.

Abstract

LNE is developing a MEtrological ChARacterization of Nanomaterials (CARMEN) platform to offer a complete supply of main parameter measurements characterizing a nano-object (size, shape, polydispersity, agglomeration/aggregation state, surface charges, specific charges. . . ). Other physical properties such local electrical measurements will be able to be performed on nanodevices. This platform aims to establish tracability routes, define measurement protocols and sampling methods. The uncertainties associated with measurements will offer to users an optimum confidence level. Instrumentation is put in a clean room within a controlled environment (temperature, humidity, vibration. . . ). Thanks to this platform, LNE will be able to help manufacturers and laboratories to meet to the governmental requests concerning the mandatory declaration of nanosubstances as described in the French decree number 2012-232, dated the 17th on February, 2012 (JORF number 0043 on 19th February 2012). Furthermore, this platform will make it possible to support the teams involved in the toxicological investigations linked to nanomaterials.

Abstract

Day after day, new applications using manufactured nanoparticles appear in industry. To evaluate the occupational risk associated to nanoparticles, it is important to have reliable, accurate and standardized measurement methods. It is therefore necessary to work on pre-normalization projects to develop reference methods to characterize the number and the size distribution of airborne nanoparticles. The aim of this pre-normalization project is to develop characterization methods for airborne nanoparticles that include all the measurement chain (sampling, analysis, data treatments, etc.) which will be traceable, adequate and accurate: this project includes the estimation of the uncertainties on the measurements. This presented study, first step of this project, describes the generation and the characterization of SiO2 airborne nanoparticles from a liquid manufactured suspension. Experiments have been performed in order to study the stability and the repeatability of the generation protocol of SiO2 airborne nanoparticles by measuring their count size distributions with a Scanning Mobility Particle Sizer (SMPS).

Abstract

pH measurements of seawater are suffering of a lack of spatiotemporal compatibility and comparability. The present paper makes an analysis of the current state of art of seawater pH measurement. The theoretical problemes, such as the definition of the activity coefficient, and practical problemes related especially to the complex matrix are pointed out. The necessary actions to overcome theses difficulties are also described. They are part of an European Joint Research Project entituled “Metrology for the salinity and ocean acidification” and funded by EMRP. Some preliminary results obtained for a saline solution containing only NaCl are presented in order to show the influence of the matrix on the experimentally obtained acidity functions.

Abstract

This work presents the development of a reference method by ICP-MS for the determination of iron in serum. To ensure the metrological traceability of the results, isotope dilution associated with ICP-MS (ID-ICP-MS) has been applied, which has the potential to be a primary measurement procedure. Method validation has been demonstrated through the use of a certified reference material (SRM 1598a) and the participation in an international comparison between National Metrology Institutes (BIPM-CCQM K107). The validated method is now available to support clinical laboratories in the evaluation of their measurement capabilities and for quality assurance and quality control programmes. In fact, this ID-ICP-MS method can be used to certify reference materials or to assign reference values to samples used in proficiency testing schemes. The feasibility has been tested on two unknown samples, i.e. BCR® -637, IRMM sample and an ANSM B17 sample (a material distributed during a National Quality Control programme).

Abstract

To ensure the water quality in Europe, the European Commission asked the member states to provide comparable and traceable measurement results for the analysis of critical pollutants. Considering the increasing environmental challenges, the contribution of metrology is necessary both for the improvement of analysis reliability and the comparability of results. For this reason the European research project Euramet/EMRP/ENV08 “Traceable measurements for monitoring critical pollutants under the European Water Framework Directive (WFD-2000/60/EC)”, funded by the EMRP, aimed to provide the elements for the development of a metrological basis. The project develops primary reference methods enabling the analysis of priority hazardous substances in order to meet the WFD requirements in terms of performance levels (limit of quantification and uncertainties). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) – priority hazardous substances for which no DCE compatible methods exist – are among the three families of pollutants targeted by the project. This paper tackles the development and validation of the PAH analysis method on whole water samples. The method that best meets the requirements of the WFD in terms of level of concentration and uncertainty is the solid phase extraction (SPE) method with SPE-disks, followed by isotope dilution analysis combined with gas chromatography mass spectrometry (ID-GC/MS).
