La compréhension et les multiples démonstrations expérimentales de l’interférométrie à atomes ont permis la conception et réalisation de capteurs inertiels à atomes froids. Ces dispositifs, destinés initialement à la métrologie et les mesures de haute précision, sont aujourd’hui en phase d’industrialisation et constituent un des piliers de la deuxième révolution quantique. Les premiers capteurs ont été conçus pour fonctionner dans les laboratoires, et de ce fait ils sont difficilement adaptés pour des applications de terrain comme la navigation inertielle. L’objectif central de cette thèse est donc l’étude de technologies habilitantes pour la réalisation de capteurs inertiels compacts. Une puce à atomes a été choisie comme élément clé du paquet physique. Elle permet de réduire la taille de capteurs tout en donnant la possibilité d’avoir une source cohérente froide ou ultra-froide d’atomes et la réalisation de différentes fonctions nécessaires à l’interférométrie atomique. En premier lieu, ce manuscrit aborde le refroidissement des atomes ainsi que la préparation des atomes dans un piège magnétique, puis il présente la mise en place de différents éléments d’optique atomique à base de faisceaux laser, ainsi que le développement d’un protocole donné pour une mesure inertielle de rotation avec un guide magnétique linéaire. En particulier, l'étude expérimentale de la propagation cohérente des atomes dans ce guide est relatée.

Un facteur essentiel dans les applications de navigation inertielle est la stabilité de centrales de mesure inertielle. Ce paramètre est affecté sérieusement par les temps morts entre les mesures. Comme les capteurs à atomes froids présentent un temps mort important, dû au processus de refroidissement, la recherche d'une possible solution à ce problème a fait l'objet de cette thèse. Plus précisément, une nouvelle technique a été mise en œuvre pour la mesure hyperfréquence et non-destructive de la population de niveaux atomiques utilisés dans un interféromètre. Cette méthode de détection conduit à une réduction conséquente du temps mort sur plusieurs cycles de mesure interférométriques, avec un fort potentiel d’intégration sur les puces à atomes.

L’étude menée a porté sur l’horloge double modulation à piégeage cohérent de modulation et ses limitations de stabilité sur les temps longs. Un tour d’horizon de l’état de l’art des horloges compactes dans le monde a été dressé. Le cadre théorique de la DM-CPT a été posé et le montage expérimental est décrit avec la source laser, la synthèse micro-onde et le résonateur atomique. Un bilan détaillé des limitations de l’horloge est présenté à 1 s et à 1 000 s en dressant une liste des différentes contributions. Une nouvelle séquence temporelle est proposée pour corriger les effets lumineux dus aux déséquilibres entre les deux longueurs d'ondes utiles au CPT en agissant sur la puissance micro-onde, et ainsi améliorer la stabilité sur les temps longs. La conclusion précise le positionnement de l’horloge DM-CPT par rapport aux autres technologies disponibles et mentionne quelques améliorations à apporter.

Résumé de la thèse

Cette thèse présente les avancées de la chaîne de fréquence opérationnelle du SYRTE, ensemble de différents oscillateurs ultrastables et peignes de fréquence. Le travail de recherche porte sur l’analyse du bruit des éléments critiques, afin de déterminer les limites de stabilité et d’exactitude de cette architecture métrologique. Les performances sont mesurées par comparaisons simultanées de paires d’oscillateurs avec 3 chaînes entièrement indépendantes. Les résolutions relatives obtenues, en deçà de 1×10–16 dans le domaine micro-onde et de 1×10–18 dans le domaine optique, démontrent que ces moyens de mesures ne sont pas limitants, même avec les horloges à l’état de l’art. Un élément clé des horloges optiques est la lumière sondant la transition métrologique. Si les meilleurs lasers ultrastables sont conçus dans l’infrarouge, la technique du transfert de pureté spectrale permet de transmettre leur niveau de performance aux longueurs d’onde visibles cibles (698 nm et 1 062 nm) via un peigne de fréquence. Ce travail décrit ainsi un transfert hors boucle de résolution meilleure que 5×10–18 à 1 s, utilisé pour l’interrogation synchronisées des horloges strontium et mercure du laboratoire lorsque leurs lasers d’horloge respectifs bénéficient du transfert d’un unique maître à 1 542 nm. Ceci a déjà permis un gain d’un facteur 2 de la stabilité dans la mesure du rapport mercure/strontium.

Cette thèse s’inscrit dans le cadre de deux projets de recherche qui se placent dans le contexte des deux grandes théories de la physique moderne : la relativité générale et le modèle standard. — Le premier projet a pour objectif de mesurer le décalage vers le rouge gravitationnel entre l’horloge PHARAO de l’ensemble ACES-PHARAO (qui sera arrimé à l’ISS) et les meilleures horloges des différents laboratoires de métrologie. En tant que centre de traitement et d’analyse des données, le laboratoire LNE-SYRTE prépare activement le futur lancement de la mission en développant différents logiciels dédiés. Ce manuscrit présente le dernier étage de traitement qui a permis de valider les attentes de la mission et qui permettra d’extraire le paramètre de violation de la théorie d’Albert Einstein. — Le second projet est une expérience de recherche de matière noire située à l’Observatoire de Paris. Selon la théorie des champs scalaires ultra-léger, la matière noire entourant la Terre serait à l’origine d’une variation des constantes fondamentales. Celle-ci entraine une oscillation temporelle de la longueur de la cavité ultrastable et de la fibre optique composant l’interféromètre de Mach-Zehnder de l’expérience. La mise en place, le développement et l’optimisation du dispositif optique ont permis d’atteindre un niveau de sensibilité suffisamment faible pour placer des contraintes compétitives sur les modèles de matière noire mais n’a malheureusement pas révélé de trace de cette matière inconnue dans la zone de sensibilité de l’expérience.

Résumé de la thèse

Cette thèse porte sur le développement d’un dispositif laser à 1,54 µm, triplé en fréquence et stabilisé en fréquence sur une transition hyperfine de l’iode moléculaire au voisinage de 514 nm. Une partie importante de ce travail est consacrée au triplage de fréquence (ω vers 3ω) de la source IR, ainsi qu’à la modulation en phase de la radiation IR (ω), pour sonder la vapeur moléculaire d’iode dans le vert (3ω). La spectroscopie sub-Doppler de l’iode implique une modulation de phase par un électro-optique, un asservissement le la puissance optique par un modulateur acousto-optique et deux cristaux non linéaires cascadés en Niobate de lithium. Une puissance harmonique supérieure à 100 mW a été générée à 514 nm, à partir d’une puissance fondamentale inférieure à 1 W à 1,54 µm. Le banc laser est totalement fibré. La puissance électrique totale nécessaire pour réaliser les opérations de modulation de phase et d’amplitude, ainsi que le triplage de fréquence est inférieure à 30 W. Ce dispositif laser permet de fournir simultanément trois radiations intenses, stabilisées en fréquence, à 1,54 µm, 772 nm et 514 nm. La seconde partie du dispositif est un banc de spectroscopie laser très compact qui est basé sur une courte cellule en quartz scellée, contenant une vapeur d’iode moléculaire. Une puissance optique inférieure à 10 mW dans le vert est suffisante pour détecter les transitions hyperfines de l’iode, de grand facteur de qualité au voisinage de 514 nm (Q supérieur à 2×109). Une stabilité de fréquence de 3×10-14 τ-1/2 avec un minimum de 4×10-15 à 200 s a été démontrée dans le cadre de cette étude par une modulation de phase dans le vert. Dans le cas d’une modulation de phase dans l’infrarouge, une stabilité de fréquence de 4,7×10-14 τ-1/2 a été obtenue. Cette étude a permis d’identifier les points clés permettant de mettre en place dans le futur proche, un dispositif laser stabilisé, totalement fibré, d’un volume inférieur à 10 L. Une limitation de la stabilité de fréquence à moyen terme, importante et inattendue dû au champ magnétique environnant a été mise en évidence, au niveau de 10-15/mGauss. Ce développement pourrait répondre aux besoins de nombreux projets spatiaux nécessitant des liens optiques ultrastables en fréquence, inter-satellites ou bord-sol, pour la géodésie spatiale (GRICE), la mesure du champ gravitationnel terrestre (GRACE FO, NGGM), la détection d’ondes gravitationnelles (LISA), etc.
